We are a smaller business; how can I attract good people?

It’s not all about the money!

Yes, I’m sure that your larger competitors have the money to offer the best salaries but for most people going to work is not all about the money.

Very few people leave a job because they want more money.  The reason, more often than not, is that the employee has fallen out of love with the business or the management of the business.

With that in mind attracting the very best and most talented people will be influenced by everything else you can do as a smaller business.

When you are creating your job and person specification build in the benefits of working for a smaller business and make sure your website and careers page reflect the culture in your business.

Bear in mind too that you will have a huge advantage over many bigger businesses if you think about why people work in smaller businesses in the first place. Not everyone wants to work in a large office for a big name – many prefer a small office with a small team where they feel valued and believe that they can make a difference. Many people will opt for the flexibility a small business can offer over the perceived benefit that a higher salary can bring.
