Today is World Menopause Day.
What is it and why is it important?
World Menopause Day is held annually on 18th October with the purpose of raising awareness of the menopause and the support options available for improving health and wellbeing.
Thankfully, a lot is being said about menopause in the last few years. We are the lucky generation who are going through menopause in a time when it’s more acceptable than ever to talk about it. Not only to talk about it but to seek help if it’s needed and to support others by sharing our stories. Our mothers (generally speaking) did not have the privilege of being able to speak openly about how they felt and what they coped with.
For this blog post, I wanted to focus on what each one of us can do to make a discussion about menopause as normal as a conversation about a cold or a broken leg.
Here’s a bit about what I do. I:
- confidently talk about my own experiences of perimenopause so far; not only that, but I do my bit in making it a topic of conversation for my clients.
- normalise menopause-related discussions.
- speak to employees about their experiences and work with them to make the workplace a more accommodating place for them.
- educate my clients.
- make webinars on the subject of menopause in the workplace.
- put policies together for businesses who want to understand and support their colleagues.
- deliver training on the menopause so all staff have an improved understanding; either for themselves or for their colleagues.
- Encourage every business to sign up to the Menopause Workplace Pledge.
But of course, I can do more and I will continue to work with my small business clients to ensure that every member of staff feels comfortable, confident and supported at work.
It may be World Menopause Day today but every day should be a day when discussions about menopause, HRT and anything else that’s relevant can be openly raised in the workplace.
If your business could benefit from support in introducing menopause discussions in the workplace, get in touch.
